Preschool Director
The Preschool Director is responsible for the overall leadership and day-to-day operation of the Community
United Methodist Church Preschool. This role ensures a safe, nurturing, developmentally appropriate learning
environment while maintaining full compliance with California Title XXII licensing requirements and church
oversight expectations. The Director leads staff, partners closely with families, manages fiscal and administrative
functions, and serves as the primary liaison between the preschool, the church, and the broader community.
Work Schedule
Typical hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
The role also requires availability outside standard hours for school-related events including, but not limited to,
Fall Festival, Open Houses, Parent Education nights, Board and Church Council meetings, and church events.
Seasonal responsibilities include school setup in August and closeout activities in June and July.
Required Qualifications
Regulatory
Must meet all Director qualifications under Title XXII of the California Department of Social Services, including
required education, units, and classroom experience.
Education and Experience
Must meet at least one of the following pathways, as permitted under Title XXII:
- Bachelor’s or graduate degree in Early Childhood Education or Child Development
- Associate degree in ECE with required licensed classroom experience
- Child Development Associate credential with required licensed experience
- High school diploma or GED with required ECE units and licensed classroom experience
Professional
Current member of OCAEYC or willingness to join. Active engagement in early childhood education best practices.
Alignment with a church-based preschool environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Administrative and Fiscal Management
- Oversee daily operations, office management, and campus security
- Maintain accurate administrative, financial, personnel, and child records
- Ensure compliance with all state, local, and church oversight requirements
- Lead annual budgeting process and present proposals to the Preschool Board and Church Council
- Manage enrollment strategies, marketing efforts, website updates, and community outreach activities
Staff Leadership and Development - Hire, supervise, and evaluate teaching and support staff
- Conduct annual performance evaluations and ongoing coaching
- Plan and lead regular staff meetings focused on curriculum and professional development
- Support ongoing professional development and training for staff
- Maintain a qualified substitute teacher pool
Children’s Program, Health, and Safety
- Establish and monitor age-appropriate curriculum standards
- Ensure a consistent, high-quality educational experience for all children
- Develop, maintain, and implement required safety and emergency plans including fire, earthquake,
intruder, workplace violence prevention, integrated germ management, and any plans required by state,
local, or church authorities - Ensure CPR and First Aid coverage is always present
- Act as a constant advocate for children’s health, safety, and wellbeing
Family Engagement and Parent Education
- Serve as a primary point of contact for families
- Schedule and lead parent orientations, conferences, and parent education opportunities
- Define and deliver parent education expectations and programming
- Communicate regularly with families through email, letters, flyers, and Brightwheel
- Coordinate consistent monthly communications sharing key updates and school information
Church and Community Integration
- Attend Preschool Board, Church Council, and staff meetings as required
- Participate in church-related programs and events such as VBS and Messy Church
- Act as liaison between the Preschool Board and staff regarding policies, decisions, and operations
Physical and Mental Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and respond quickly in emergency situations
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with children and adults
Salary and Benefits
Salary is commensurate with experience and local market requirements and will be disclosed in accordance with
applicable California pay transparency laws.

Assistant Preschool Director
The Assistant Preschool Director supports daily preschool operations while training to transition into the Director role.
This position combines classroom support, administrative responsibilities, and leadership development under the
guidance of the current Director. The role is designed as a succession pathway, preparing the selected candidate to
assume full Director responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Operations and Classroom Support
- Support daily classroom coverage and ensure proper staff-to-child ratios
- Step into classrooms as needed to maintain smooth program operations
- Assist with staff scheduling and coverage coordination
Licensing and Compliance
- Support maintenance of child, staff, and program records in accordance with California Title 22 requirements
- Assist with licensing compliance, audits, and inspection readiness
- Help implement and maintain required safety and emergency plans
Administrative Support - Maintain organized enrollment, health, and personnel records
- Support day-to-day office operations and communication workflows
- Assist with enrollment tracking and operational reporting
Leadership Development
- Shadow and support the Preschool Director in program oversight and decision-making
- Act as Director when needed, including managing staff and parent interactions
- Participate in staff supervision, coaching, and performance discussions
Staff and Family Support - Support teachers with classroom needs, guidance, and problem-solving
- Communicate with families and assist in resolving questions or concerns
- Help facilitate consistent parent communication through established channels
Community and Program Engagement
- Support school events, open houses, and family engagement activities
- Participate in church-related and community programming connected to the preschool
Qualifications
Candidates must meet one of the following education and experience pathways:
- Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education or Child Development
- Minimum 1 year experience in an early childhood setting as a lead teacher and/or in an administrative
role
- Minimum 1 year experience in an early childhood setting as a lead teacher and/or in an administrative
- Associate’s degree in Early Childhood Education or Child Development
- Minimum 2 years experience in an early childhood setting as a lead teacher and/or in an administrative role
- Minimum 15 units in Early Childhood Education (including at least 3 units in administration)
- Minimum 4 years experience in an early childhood setting as a lead teacher and/or in an administrative role
Additional requirements:
- Experience in a licensed preschool or childcare setting
- Demonstrated leadership capability in a classroom or administrative environment
- Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills
- Ability and interest in progressing into a Preschool Director role
Compensation and Growth Path
- Assistant Director Compensation:
- $28–$32 per hour
- 30–40 hours per week
- Growth Opportunity:
This role is designed as a pathway into the Preschool Director position. Upon transition to Director, the position
will be full-time, exempt
ECE – Lead Preschool Teacher
We are seeking an experienced and passionate Early Childhood Educator to join our teaching team working with children from 2/12 – 5 year olds
Responsibilities Include:
- Creating a welcoming, nurturing and stimulating learning environment.
- Developing and implementing both an age and individually appropriate play-based program that foster growth across all developmental domains.
- Providing supervision that promotes safe classroom and playground environments.
Requirements:
- Minimum 12 ECE Units, AA/BA preferred
